“We oppose the use of eminent domain for this or any other project in the Badlands,” said BCA board president Christine Hogan, a retired Bismarck attorney. “Eminent domain is not the spirit of the North Dakota Badlands. Such tactics inevitably create bitterness in the ranch community. If Billings County wants a bridge, they should work to obtain the consent of the ranch owners whose private property would be impacted by the project.”

Our New Office for Staff

Exciting News!! Badlands Conservation Alliance now has an office!

After more than 20 years of relying on staff to work from home offices, we have moved into a dedicated office for staff, as well as the use of meeting rooms and other common spaces for board meetings, membership meetings, and coordinating activities. We will be co-located with other like-minded groups within the Bismarck offices of the ND Natural Resources Trust at 1604 East Capitol Avenue, Suite 103.

Badlands on the Brink

In 1964, Congress passed the Wilderness Act "to secure for the American people of present and future generations the benefits of an enduring source of wilderness."

Almost 30 years after the passage of the act, the promise is yet to be fulfilled. North Dakota is one of only three states that has not passed a comprehensive statewide U.S. Forest Service wilderness bill. Meanwhile, the amount of wilderness in the state that qualifies for protection is rapidly diminishing.

BCA Annual Meeting 2022

Twenty people from all around ND, including some new members, joined Badlands Conservation Alliance in Bismarck on Oct. 8th, for potluck, conversation, and to conduct the organization business, led by President Connie Triplett, followed by the songs and stories of the badlands by Rick Watson. The group passed the motion accepting the election of Bill Knudson as a member of the board and discussed future plans and strategies and opportunities. Bill Knudson of Mandan was confirmed by motion to serve a term bringing the board to capacity. The newly reorganized board will meet on Nov. 27th.

TRNP Update

As reported by the Bismarck Tribune, May 23, 2022, Theodore Roosevelt National Park has a new Superintendent, Angie Richman, who has arrived in Medora. Her predecessor, Wendy Ross, left last fall to begin as a deputy director for three U.S. Interior Department regions in the Midwest.

In November 2021, TRNP held meetings for their Comprehensive Site Planning Update which BCA attended. BCA will continue to be engaged in this important planning process.
