Clay Jenkinson, Theodore Roosevelt Scholar and Historian, will lead the hike from the Elkhorn Ranch parking lot to the site of Roosevelt's Historic Cabin location. The hiking trail is relatively flat, 1.4 miles out-and-back. Mr. Jenkinson will discuss TR and the Badlands, the building of the Elkhorn Ranch, and the Elkhorn as a shrine to American conservation.

Rooms are available in Medora at Rough Riders Hotel or AmericInn if you plan to stay the night prior, Saturday, Oct. 14th.
Jenn Morelock, owner of Dakota Cyclery, will join the outing and has agreed to use one of her 11-person vans to shuttle folks to Elkhorn Ranch from Chimney Park.
Folks can gather in Chimney Park, just past TRNP entrance, between 8:30–9:00 am MDT to carpool together or join the shuttle.
We'll depart shortly after 9:00 am MDT.
The drive from Chimney Park to the Elkhorn Ranch parking lot is slightly over an hour.
Bring water, lunch and snacks; sunscreen, hat, and other sun and bug protection; please check the weather and dress accordingly, including good hiking shoes.
We'll be back in Medora by mid-afternoon.
Driving Directions
Head west out of Medora on Interstate 94
Take Exit 10 (Sentinel Butte/Camels Hump Lake)
Travel north (right turn on Co. Rd 11, then travel roughly 8 miles)
Follow until Westerheim Rd (see picture and turn right)
Head on Westerheim Rd for 6 miles
Turn left onto Bell Lake Rd (sign and 12 miles)
Follow Bell Lake Rd
Turn right at Elkhorn Campground (sign)
Watch for cattle on the road!
1 mile to campground then turn right at campground to head to Elkhorn Ranch Parking lot
Roughly 5 minute drive from Elkhorn campground to Elkhorn Ranch parking lot
BCA will place cones at the intersections and base of street signs for easier navigation once travelers leave Interstate 94 onto Co. Rd 11.
