Canceled: Hike at TRNP North Unit

Canceled: Hike at TRNP North Unit

With over 110,000 acres burned by wildfires in the Badlands over the last week — and another fire on Thursday that burned eight acres in Theodore Roosevelt National Park — we've decided to cancel our Oct. 12th hike for safety, and to stay off the roads to allow emergency crews to do their difficult work.

From North Dakota Monitor: State Fire Marshal Doug Nelson "urged the public to continue taking precautions to minimize fire risk. 'We still have a high fire danger, and we still have unusual heat, and we still have winds, as always in North Dakota. So be vigilant,' Nelson said."

In the Bismarck Tribune yesterday, Joey Harris wrote: "Every person who the Tribune spoke to said the fires were unlike anything they had seen in the state's northwest."

Our hearts are with everyone who has been affected by these devastating fires.

Stay safe. See you next time.

BCA's Annual Meeting will be held in Bismarck on November 16th. RSVP on Facebook.

RSVP on Facebook.

Join BCA as we hike in the North Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park.

BCA will meet interested hikers at 9 a.m. CDT on Saturday, Oct. 12 at Juniper Campground in the North Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Meet us in the parking lot inside Juniper Campground to the right near the picnic area at 9 a.m. Central Time.

We'll drive and carpool to the Oxbow Overlook. Then we'll hike towards Sperati Point before turning down Achenbach Trail in search of the oldest known plains cottonwood tree. The tree predates TR's time in the Badlands.

The hike will be about 6 miles round trip. The hike is relatively flat at the start then will be a beautiful drop down to the river bottom via switchbacks. A steeper hike out can be expected. The first fifteen that RSVP will get lunch provided thanks to Bravera Bank.

A few of us are camping the night before the hike. If you'd like to join, please contact Shannon Straight.

No water is available in the campground as it has been shut off for the season. Make sure to fill your water bottles at TRNP’s North Unit Visitor Center.

Fall in the Badlands can be beautiful, but mornings can be quite cool or cold. Dress accordingly, wear quality hiking footwear, and bring water, snacks, and lunch.
